Biography
Family Band unites the husband-and-wife team of Jonny Ollsin, previously of Children and S.T.R.E.E.T.S., with visual artist Kim Krans, alongside Scott Hirsch of the Court & Spark and Hiss Golden Messenger. The pair first crossed paths in the Catskills during 2005 and initially treated the project as a casual diversion while Ollsin remained active with the heavy-metal outfit Children. Once that band dissolved, the couple began devoting more serious attention to their own music. In 2008 they constructed a cabin in Delhi, a modest town in upstate New York, where they encountered Hirsch; his contributions helped shape the group’s blend of folk-steeped ambient rock and Krans’s moody alto. That same year Family Band issued its self-released debut EP, Blessed. The self-released full-length Miller Path arrived in April 2010, its title taken from a nearby street that hosted the bulk of the sessions, and was followed in November by the audiovisual EP Cold Songs. Appearances in The FADER, NYLON, and Stereogum expanded the band’s visibility, leading to a spring tour supporting the atmospheric rock group Warpaint. The sophomore album Grace & Lies appeared on the No Quarter label in July 2012, while several tracks from Miller Path were licensed by ABC for the crime-docudrama series Final Witness.
