Fancey first gained recognition playing guitar in the Vancouver indie rock collective the New Pornographers, which he entered in 2002 and contributed to on their Electric Version album from 2003. Prior to that, he had participated in Limblifter, handling bass duties for the group's Bellaclava album issued in 2000. Born in Nova Scotia, Fancey had performed with several groups ahead of his time in Limblifter, among them Macabre, Sunshower, Virgin Lust, Jack Tripper, and Taste of Joy. His initial solo outing arrived in 2004 via March Records under the Fancey moniker. Influenced by his appreciation for 1970s AM pop along with acts such as the Association, Sagittarius, and Stereolab, and aided by Kurt Dahle along with Sara Lapsley, this effort marked a promising start. In 2007 he issued Schmancey as his follow-up solo release, extending his approach to retro-styled pop. Although he continued to tour and appear on three additional albums by the New Pornographers, it took ten years until he put out Love Mirage in 2017.
