Singer, instrumentalist, and composer Atrash distinguished himself through a resonant voice carrying an affecting emotional depth, through his adherence to performance styles viewed as genuinely rooted in both Egyptian and Levantine popular traditions, and most prominently through his commanding command of the ud. Born in Syria, he relocated to Egypt with his mother at approximately nine years of age. A member of a musical household, he benefited from his mother “Aliyah,” who sustained the family through her own singing, while his sister Asmahan shared the screen with him in numerous films. In addition to his vocal abilities, Atrash proved a master ud player, having pursued formal study at Cairo’s Institute of Arab Music before beginning his professional work as accompanist to an established singer. He restored the concert practice of embedding extended improvised instrumental solos, or tagasim, within larger compositions, realizing this by expanding the instrumental preludes to his songs and weaving the improvisations directly into them. As a result, recordings of his live performances made him the Arab world’s best-known exponent of the instrument and secured him the sobriquet “King of the Ud.”
