Biography
Farrah Fawx moves across stylistic boundaries as a vocalist, MC, and songwriter at home in current R&B, rap, house, and pop, as well as further idioms. Her earliest tracks emerged in the late 2010s and secured a contract with independent imprint Guin Records, home to the 2022 EP The Hopeful Cynic, whose title reflects Fawx’s own lyrical stance.
Since that EP appeared, she has joined Ebony Beach Club, Nascent, Stooki Sound, and Cezaire on recordings that stretch from understated hip-hop to contemporary disco-funk.
Fawx began singing in church during childhood. Raised in Virginia, she also absorbed jazz and R&B alongside gospel and was especially shaped at a young age by Brandy. Although rap was banned in her home, she later embraced the genre and took further cues from fellow Virginian Missy Elliott and Lauryn Hill, two artists with sharply defined identities who moved fluidly between singing and rapping.
She first built recognition under the name Audra the Rapper, releasing a debut mixtape in 2007 and continuing through additional mixtapes and singles, a placement in the second episode of Insecure, and the 2016 album Anti Love Songs.
Before the decade closed, Audra the Rapper gave way to Farrah Fawx through a featured appearance on Tray Haggerty’s “Waterfalls,” followed by the lead single “Never Thought,” a strutting, kinetic track produced by Jimmy Edgar and KLSH. After another single in 2020, Fawx appeared on Rochelle Jordan’s 2021 album Play with the Changes; her sound then broadened further with “Bias,” her most atmospheric recording to that point, and the buoyant “Dollar Bamboos.” Issued at the start of 2022, “Bias” and “Dollar Bamboos” previewed The Hopeful Cynic, the six-track EP released that May.
Fawx reappeared the following year on Ebony Beach Club’s “Hands in the Sand” and, in 2024, assisted Nascent on “All to Me” before linking with Stooki Sound and Cezaire for the respective singles “Reload” and “Don't Stop the Movement.”
