The husband-and-wife duo Bob and Jayne Farrell fronted the respected CCM ensemble Farrell & Farrell, which first surfaced from the Houston, Texas music circuit in the early 1970s. Bob entered the group Dove in 1974, one of the inaugural acts on the fledgling Myrrh label, while Jayne focused on a solo path at the time; after his departure from Dove in 1976 the pair began collaborating as Farrell & Farrell. Their 1978 self-titled debut album quickly reached the top of the CHR charts thanks to its polished techno-pop approach, and the duo ranked among the earliest performers in both mainstream and faith-based music to incorporate a Fairlight synthesizer. Later releases such as 1979’s Portrait of Us All and 1981’s Make Me Ready, which featured the number-one single “All You Need,” followed, even as Bob established himself as a prolific songwriter who scored multiple CCM hits for other artists. Following the 1982 live album Let the Whole World Know, the pair moved to the Star Song roster for 1984’s Choices; its 1985 successor Jump to Conclusions earned strong acclaim and yielded a major success with the media satire “People in a Box.” After releasing Manifesto in 1986, the duo devoted three years to preparing Superpower before stepping away from the stage. Bob subsequently concentrated solely on songwriting, supplying material to artists that included Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, and Sandi Patty, while Jayne issued a solo album and pursued composition as well.
