Biography
Born December 2, 1973, in Suresnes, Michaël Youn later earned acclaim from devotees of French hip-hop and musical satire as the inventive mind behind Fatal Bazooka. After completing formal theater studies, he secured a 1998 role performing sketch comedy on the morning broadcast of Paris radio station Skyrock. His growing popularity there drew the attention of television executives, who placed him on Metropole Television M6’s Morning Live. Working with Vincent Desagnat and Benjamin Morgaine, he created extravagant public stunts and sketches that spoofed musical figures alongside French rappers, and the program’s popularity rested largely on their contributions. In 2002 the trio departed to pursue their own comedic music projects, scoring an immediate commercial triumph with the Bratisla Boys’ single “Stach, Stach,” one of the year’s strongest sellers. Youn followed with another chart success, “Le Frunkp,” performed by a persona presented as James Brown’s previously unknown brother and billed as a novel fusion of funk and rap called “frunkp.” After a nationwide comedy tour, he expanded a character first seen on Morning Live into the hardcore rap outfit Fatal Bazooka, whose featured MCs Profanation Fonky and La Marmotte Infernale were widely viewed as satirical portraits of Grand Corps Malade and Booba. The group’s late-2006 single “Foust a Cagoule” reached number one on the French charts and stood as Youn’s greatest achievement at the time. Multiple singles preceded the 2007 release of the act’s debut album, T’as Vu?
