Biography
York, England provided the setting for Fawn Spots, which came together in 2011 when Jonathan Meager and Oliver Grabowski first joined forces as a duo. They drew inspiration from confrontational experimental musicians and foundational hardcore outfits such as Black Flag while pursuing a harsh, abrasive punk approach. In those initial years the pair handled their own releases for several early EPs, yet the music soon evolved toward a more reflective stance that merged the intensity of hardcore with the introspective, emotionally remote compositions associated with Hüsker Dü, Rites of Spring, Joy Division, and other key acts that expanded punk’s scope through thoughtful means rather than sheer force. After multiple personnel shifts, drummer Paddy Carley completed the lineup alongside Grabowski and Meager. The resulting trio devoted sustained effort to shaping a style informed by varied strains of punk alongside broader radical artistic currents, before unveiling their first full-length album, From Safer Place, during spring 2015.
