Born in Iraq and now based in Paris, oud and oboe player as well as vocalist Fawzy Al-Aiedy has refreshed centuries-old Middle Eastern traditions with contemporary inflections. Fondly nicknamed the "Sultan of swing," he continues to link the region’s classical repertoire with Western improvisational approaches. Raised in the Iraqi port of Bassorah, he began violin and vocal lessons at fourteen. Hopes of pursuing formal studies overseas faded once the Ba’ath regime seized power and forbade Iraqi citizens from traveling abroad. After petitioning Saddam Hussein for an exit visa, he was instead conscripted into the Iraqi army. Three months of basic training later, he was reassigned to the military’s music division. In 1971 he received clearance to visit Europe, settled in Paris, and took up oboe studies. Five years afterward he issued his first album, Silence. Subsequent recordings have explored the musical atmosphere evoked in 1001 Arabian Nights. Although most of his output addresses general audiences, he has also created several albums aimed at children.
