Rooted in minimal guitar, synthesizer, and drums, Fears produces sparse, sighing atmospheres through the work of musician and producer Constance Keane. As a participant in the post-punk group M(h)aol, she issued the debut full-length for her solo endeavor, Oíche, during 2021. Affinity arrived in 2024, retaining its spectral quality while expanding through greater collaboration.

An artist, fashion designer, and musician, Dublin native and London resident Constance Keane launched the solo project Fears in May 2020. The self-released single “two_,” a delicate track addressing experiences with self-harm, coincided with the Northern Ireland Mental Health Arts Festival. That song later appeared on Fears’ first album, the self-produced Oíche—Irish for “Night”—issued by Tulle in May 2021. During this period Keane performed on drums with the feminist post-punk band M(h)aol, whose lineup featured singer/lyricist Róisín Nic Ghearailt, producer/bassist Jamie Hyland, guitarist Sean Nolan, and bassist Zoë Greenway; the group released its own debut EP, Gender Studies, that same year. Both initial releases drew praise from The Guardian, NME, and Irish Independent.

While touring Europe and the U.K., Fears developed a following for its hypnotic live performances. In contrast, M(h)aol secured a deal with Merge Records and delivered its raw 2023 full-length debut, Attachment Styles. Returning to Tulle, Fears pursued a personal, introspective direction on the sophomore album affinity, released in March 2024. Keane wrote, recorded, and produced the set, which featured contributions from singer Ailbhe Reddy, trumpeter/singer Jemima Coulter, harpist Aga Ujma, and cellist Sophie Gwen Williams.
