Felice Taylor entered the world on January 29, 1948, and lent her voice to the Sweets, a trio completed by sisters Norma and Darlene. In the mid-1960s Barry White, still awaiting his breakthrough, handled production for the vocalist at Bob Keane’s R&B outlet Bronco Records, where her delivery recalled Diana Ross. The lone Billboard entry for Taylor proved to be “It May Be Winter Outside (But in My Heart It’s Spring),” which reached number 44 R&B and number 42 pop in early 1967, though her releases fared better in the U.K. Three Mustang singles issued under the Bronco banner—“It May Be Winter Outside” b/w “Winter Again,” “Under the Influence of Love,” and “I Feel Love Coming On”—were all co-written and produced by White. After departing Bronco she recorded for Kent, including the track “Captured By Your Love.” Subsequent sessions took place in Britain with Eddy Grant and Derv Gordon of the Equals. During summer 1973 White’s protégées Love Unlimited committed Taylor’s songs “It May Be Winter Outside” and “Under the Influence of Love” to disc. Those same Bronco and Mustang sides later surfaced on the 1998 various-artists Del-Fi compilation Boss Soul: The Genius of Barry White.
