Biography
Felius Andromeda issued the 1967 single "Meditations," a standout among overlooked British psychedelic recordings whose keyboard passages strongly echoed the approach of early Procol Harum. Distinctive gothic and ecclesiastical qualities also emerged through its Gregorian-style backing vocals, a vocal delivery steeped in near-mournful philosophical reflection, and a grave spoken passage declaring "with the death of my comprehension, my heart is lost in my soul's redemption." Though unlikely material for commercial success, the track stood as an evocative specimen of hallucinatory psychedelia. Its flip side, "Cheadle Health Delusions," proved less remarkable yet offered a solid example of orchestral pop-psychedelia whose lyrics painted impressionistic scenes drawn from ordinary English existence. Given the clear talent on display, it remains noteworthy that the group never returned to the studio, releasing only this lone single even as band member Denis Couldry later issued solo efforts on Decca. Sparse documentation exists on Felius Andromeda, aside from their appearance in promotional images clad in monks' robes and the Record Mirror report that the single was tracked inside a North London church. "Meditations" has surfaced across multiple reissues, most notably the box set Acid Drops, Spacedust & Flying Saucers: Psychedelic Confectionery, whereas "Cheadle Health Delusions" appeared on the compilation Rubble 11: Adventures in the Mist, subsequently featured in the box set The Rubble Collection, Vols. 11-20.
