Herold wrote across multiple forms, encompassing opéra comique, grand opera, lyric vocal works and songs, orchestral piano concertos, chamber pieces, and solo piano music. Opera emerged as his primary strength only after years of contending with inadequate librettos. He trained at the Paris Conservatory under Adam, Kreutzer, Catel, and Mehul, whose guidance left the strongest imprint on his output. His initial opera reached the stage in Italy during 1814, yet weak text limited its impact when the composer was merely twenty-three. Twelve more years passed before he created, at thirty-five, not merely a viable opera but a resounding success with “Marie.” He joined the Théâtre-Italien in Paris, later serving there as a singing coach, and produced two ballets that enjoyed favorable reception, “La somnambule” and “La fille mal gardée.” Two operas account for his lasting reputation. “Zampa, ou La fiancée de marbre” incorporated elaborate scenic resources that highlighted the tenor Chollet’s virtuosity, while “Le pré aux clercs” offered a thoughtful examination of a divisive theme.
