Biography
Bertoni composed operas as his primary focus, along with scattered dramatic pieces, incidental scores, a wealth of motets, and a handful of oratorios. Though born outside Venice, he remained in service to its court for more than five decades, earning recognition from the local population—and viewing himself—as thoroughly Venetian. His works reached audiences not only in Italy but also at royal courts across England, Germany, and France. Among his stage works, “Orfeo ed Euridice” stood out as the most significant; it circulated through performances in Italy and Germany, and Bertoni himself directed it in London. Mayr emerged as the best-known student of this remarkably productive composer.
