Australian rock band Feverdream blended pop instincts with a pronounced affection for noise and dense atmospherics, drawing from sources that ranged across '90s acts such as Swervedriver and Radiohead to earlier post-punk groups including Killing Joke and the Cocteau Twins. The group came together officially in 1990, its roster completed by bassist/vocalist Ewan McArthur, drummer Richard D'Arcy, guitarist/keyboardist Tim James, and guitarists Ben Keenan and David Wroe. McArthur and James had already collaborated since the late '80s, reworking Cure material through synthesizers and drum machines. A U.S. indie label issued the 1997 compilation You Don't Know Us, but We Know Who You Are, which gathered highlights from three domestically issued Australian releases—Initial EP, Somewhere Elsewhere, and Moniker—that never circulated beyond the country. The same label followed with Songs By Strung Out Singles in 1998.
