Biography
Having studied as the preferred disciple of Manual Mendes at Evora Cathedral, Magalhaes rose to claim the title of greatest Portuguese composer of his era. No other creator matched the way his choral settings captured and heightened the meaning of their texts. In addition, he directed the royal chapel choir, and Mendes bequeathed to him every piece the older master had written, with the explicit wish that the works would eventually appear in print.
