Biography
Adam DiAngelo, recording as Fingernail, emerged among numerous fiercely autonomous musicians at the millennium’s dawn who harnessed new technologies and a more permeable underground network to craft distinctive, uncategorizable works. Operating from Philadelphia, he follows a solitary path, constructing his contemporary electronic pieces in domestic isolation while layering additional instruments for depth. Both his textures and methods have invited parallels to Warp Records figures such as Autechre, yet Fingernail’s material generally adopts a milder character without sacrificing momentum or visceral impact. Rhythms stutter and fracture across the ambient layers of his compositions, prioritizing immersion in the listener’s mind over any dancefloor function. His first album, the potent Backwards issued in 1998, introduced his identity and output to a receptive public, several of whom later contributed to the subsequent Remixes collection.
