Finnoguns Wake unites Finn Berzin with Shogun, the former vocalist of Royal Headache, as a creative partnership of two songwriters and vocalists who alternate lead roles and offset one another’s perspectives through punk rooted in strong melodies. Shogun supplies the world-weary lyrics and sharply soulful vocals first heard in Royal Headache, whereas Berzin’s material supplies brighter counterpoints and introduces hints of Brit-pop. The project’s first official recordings appeared in 2024 on the four-song EP Stay Young.
Shogun initiated the collaboration in the early 2020s, after years of touring with several bands, by teaming with Berzin—the younger brother of one of Shogun’s close friends—who was then only beginning his own work. The pair wrote songs together that drew from Hüsker Dü’s loud-fast approach and the polished pop of Oasis. Their earliest tracks surfaced in May 2022 as A Tale of Two Geezers, an online release containing two demos. Those songs were reworked into finished versions and joined by two further tracks to complete the Stay Young EP. Berzin and Shogun played guitar and shared lead vocals on the recordings, which also featured bassist Campbell Troy, keyboardist Gabrielle De Giorgio, and drummer Liam Hoskins. The What’s Yr Rupture label released Stay Young in January 2024.
