Emerging as a lesser-known yet creatively compelling offshoot from the intertwined Current 93 and Nurse With Wound lineage, Fire and Ice centers on Ian Read, born and raised in the U.K. The project foregrounds lyrics drawn from Nordic pagan mythology alongside corresponding musical approaches, prompting occasional accusations of right-wing extremist associations even as its advocates emphasize the recordings’ independent appeal. Regardless of interpretation, the band has produced notable material that rejects comfortable folk conventions in favor of a deliberately archaic and enigmatic tone, colored by the neo-psych explorations characteristic of the World Serpent label and its circle. Read’s earliest recorded contribution occurred with Current 93 on the 1986 album Swastikas for Noddy, yet wider notice arrived through his work with Tony Wakeford in Sol Invictus. Following multiple releases and shows under that banner, Read departed to concentrate on independent projects, establishing Fire and Ice in the early ’90s. Thereafter he has issued albums and singles at regular intervals across several imprints, chiefly through his own Fremdheit concern in partnership with sympathetic artists; among the performers joining him have been musicians associated with Death in June. Read gained further recognition for sporadic live appearances, whether solo or with expanded ensembles, at international venues that have included various pagan ceremonies and rites.
