Formed as a Mexican pop trio by agent and producer Mildred Villafañe, the lineup united Ilse Maria Olivo Schewein Furth, born in Venezuela in 1965, with Ivonne Margarita Guevara Garcia from Mexico City in 1961 and Irma “Mimi” Hernández Ochoa, born in Monterrey in 1962. Villafañe envisioned a spectacle built on flamboyant costumes, bubblegum melodies, and intricate dance routines; that formula propelled the act to national attention after their debut performance on the long-running variety show Siempre en Domingo. The self-titled first album appeared in 1985 and quickly surpassed 100,000 units across Mexico and Latin America. Its 1986 successor, 20 Millas, contained the breakout single “Timido,” which expanded their reach to concert stages throughout the United States and Latin America. The 1987 release Luz y Sombra earned platinum certification on the strength of the radio favorites “Las Mil y Una Noche” and “Corre, Corre.” Following the 1988 album Alma Gemela, the group pivoted toward a younger audience with the children’s project Cuéntamelo Dum-Dum, an effort that severed remaining ties with adult listeners. They formally dissolved in 1990 upon issuing their sixth studio album, Adíos. Nine years afterward the three women reconvened to record a seventh collection, Hadas. A 2002 lawsuit with their former manager prompted them to drop the Flans moniker in favor of Ilse.Ivonne.Mimi. and issue the greatest-hits compilation IIM. Their twentieth-anniversary celebration arrived in 2006 under the banner 20 Millas Despues, encompassing dates across Mexico and the United States. In 2014 they returned to Sony Music with the studio album Primera Fila Flans, whose lead single “Yo No Sería Yo” helped the project attain gold status inside its opening week on Mexican charts.
