Biography
Emerging from Washington, D.C., Flasher produces sparkling indie pop distinguished by its melodic intelligence and incisive lyrics, incorporating sufficient structural shifts and observational detail to introduce complexity while preserving immediate appeal. Their 2018 debut album Constant Image captured the group as a trio whose raw vigor complemented those shrewd compositions. Several years later, after an unexpected hiatus, the project resurfaced as a duo on the 2022 release Love Is Yours, a sleeker recording infused with post-punk textures that confirmed the songwriters’ abilities had sharpened during the break.
Bassist Daniel Saperstein and drummer Emma Baker, who had previously performed together in the high-school band Sad Bones, established Flasher in 2015. A late-era Sad Bones concert placed them onstage alongside guitarist Taylor Mulitz’s then-current group, after which the three players remained in contact. Academic and career paths soon scattered all three beyond Washington, D.C., prompting separate musical involvements: Baker joined Big Hush, Saperstein contributed to a band named Trouble distinct from the doom-metal act of the same name, and Mulitz gained recognition both as a member of Priests and as co-founder of the independent imprint Sister Polygon Records. Baker and Mulitz launched the punk outfit Young Trynas in 2013; Saperstein eventually participated as well, and the musicians rebranded themselves Flasher in 2015. Their self-titled debut EP appeared on Sister Polygon the following year, earning favorable notices that positioned the band as an act worth watching in the capital. Mulitz initially balanced commitments to both Priests and Flasher, yet once the latter secured a contract with Domino Records he stepped away from Priests to concentrate exclusively on the new group.
Domino released Constant Image in 2018, after which Flasher toured extensively, including multiple dates supporting the Breeders. Road demands ultimately proved unsustainable for Saperstein, who departed in 2019. Baker and Mulitz elected to proceed, assuming extra instrumental duties—Baker adding guitar, bass, and vocal parts alongside drums—while broadening their influences to encompass post-punk and art-rock elements. They entered the studio with producer Owen Wuerker in 2020 to track a second album, but pandemic conditions blocked touring plans, leading them to delay its issuance. During the wait Mulitz relocated to the West Coast to pursue business-school plans and accepted a marketing-firm position; he later resigned from that role to devote himself fully to music just as Domino issued Love Is Yours in June 2022. Prepared to perform live once more, the band assembled an expanded touring configuration featuring Baker and Mulitz alongside Wuerker on guitar, bass, and samples and Shawn Durham on drums and guitar.
