Biography
Flashlight Brown assembled around guitarist/vocalist Matt Hughes, drummer Tim Thomson, bassist Fil Bucchino, and guitarist Mike Conroy. The quartet formed in Guelph, Ontario, during 1996 and initially pursued a ska-inflected punk direction as four close friends. Their first release, an eponymous album, surfaced that same year through the Montreal indie imprint STOMP, after which they shifted to Double A for the 1997 LP Running Season. By then the group had locked into an intense touring regimen supported by a dedicated online presence. With the 2000 album Self-Titled Again on Union 2112 the band had largely shed its ska elements in favor of a punk-pop approach and formally appended “Brown” to its name. Additional roadwork ensued until a late-2002 showcase in Los Angeles secured a contract with Hollywood Records. Rob Cavallo, the noted producer of Green Day’s Dookie, oversaw the sessions for the major-label debut My Degeneration, which arrived in April 2003 containing several new songs alongside re-recorded material. The band promoted the record through a brief circuit of American high schools plus appearances on that summer’s Lollapalooza bill and at conventional clubs.
