The punk-pop outfit Flesh Vehicle, hailing from Knoxville, Tennessee, had its roots in the Used, a trash-punk quartet assembled in 1992 by singer/guitarist Tom Pappas, guitarist Brandon Fisher, bassist Chris Hargrove and drummer John Davis. The Used issued two self-released cassettes before Davis departed to launch Superdrag, soon pulling both Pappas and Fisher into the new group; Superdrag swiftly eclipsed the Used as the main creative focus for all involved, and following several well-received indie releases it cut its major-label debut Regretfully Yours in 1995, which yielded an alternative radio hit via the single "Sucked Out." Pappas meanwhile kept developing and tracking his own songs, and early in 1996 he teamed with Davis plus Superdrag drummer Don Coffey Jr. to lay down tracks as Flesh Vehicle, resulting in a self-titled cassette that appeared later that year. Following Superdrag’s 1998 album Head Trip in Every Key, Pappas exited the band to concentrate exclusively on Flesh Vehicle, which delivered Elastic Prose the next year.
