Flora Molton

Genre: Religious ,Gospel
Origin: U.S.A
Listen on Coda
Born in 1908 in Virginia, USA, Molton passed away on 31 May 1990 in Washington DC. She commenced her preaching career at seventeen yet did not begin playing guitar until 1943, coinciding with her relocation to Washington DC. Despite being virtually blind, she earned her living through street performances. Appearances on the folk circuit commenced in 1963, and a European label offered her a contract during her 1987 visit to the continent. In the open-D tuning of “Vastopol,” her slide-guitar work remained rudimentary yet forceful, drawing from blues traditions even as she emphatically disavowed their lyrical subject matter. Her vocal approach often echoed that of an unpolished Sister Rosetta Tharpe, an impression heightened whenever more accomplished accompanists joined her.
