Biography
Born in Japan, folksinger Flora Reed refined a distinctive strain of alternative folk across years of coffeehouse performances before issuing her debut in 2002. Raised in Virginia, she developed an early affinity for 1960s and 1970s singer/songwriters including Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, alongside her father’s Indian music collection. Reed completed studies in both Asia and Europe; upon her return to the United States she took up guitar and began writing songs. Once in college she started performing at student events and off-campus venues, steadily building a loyal following. After relocating to Northampton, MA, she secured odd jobs that helped spread her name through the music industry. In 1999 she recorded a demo with Adam Rothberg, producer for Dar Williams, whose sparse sound and resonating lyrics drew immediate attention. While continuing to promote herself through website updates and relentless gigging, she next completed work on a full-length album. Settle Down appeared in 2002 as an eleven-song debut containing several originals plus an a capella version of Björk’s “Joga.”
