Biography
Under the guidance of Massenet and Fauré, Schmitt completed his training at the Paris Conservatoire. Blending German and French musical traditions became the hallmark of his output, a fusion illustrated in the ballet La tragédie de Salomé and again in the Piano Quintet of 1908. His catalog spans nearly every genre, opera alone being absent. Later he assumed the directorship of the Lyons Conservatory while also writing as a critic.
