Born in Berlin in 1973, German pianist Florian Wittenburg completed his training in the Netherlands across the 1990s and later secured a scholarship for further study in Paris during the 2000s. Throughout that decade he engaged with multiple figures working in music, video, and sculpture, among them noted Russian theremin virtuoso Lydia Kavina and Dutch pianist Nico Huijbregts. Huijbregts contributed to Wittenburg’s 2013 album Sympathetic, (A)Symmetric: New Music for Piano—a release containing a suite partly inspired by Morton Feldman’s concept of “crippled symmetry”—by improvising on three pieces whose drones and melodies Wittenburg had fashioned with piano and E-Bow.
