Biography
Multi-instrumentalist and producer William Holland operated Flowering Inferno as one of his numerous aliases and as a tropical-dub endeavor. After relocating to Cali, Colombia, Holland launched the project as an evolutionary development within his existing body of work, having already issued several releases via the Quantic and Quantic Soul Orchestra names. He viewed Flowering Inferno not as an unrelated venture but as an organic extension of the Quantic aesthetic, sparked by his growing immersion in classic 1970s dub recordings from figures such as Bull Wackies and Don Drummond.
Holland unveiled the project through Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno and its inaugural album, Death of the Revolution, during summer 2008. Critics and listeners alike responded with broad enthusiasm, highlighting the recording’s distinctive yet respectful handling of dub traditions. A committed vinyl collector, Holland opted to issue the three singles—“Cuidad del Swing,” “Juanita Bonita,” and the title track—as a limited-edition trilogy of 7-inch pressings aimed at his core supporters. Two years later he followed with the second Flowering Inferno full-length, Dog with a Rope, whose energetic blend of heavy reggae rhythms, South American horn sections, and spirited drumming from Steel Pulse and UB40’s Conrad Kelly drew further positive notice.
After a period of relative inactivity, Holland resurfaced in 2016 with the long-awaited third installment, 1000 Watts. This effort marked a more straightforward engagement with pure reggae, captured entirely direct to tape and featuring contributions from several guests, among them keyboardist Ikey Owens and drummer Santa Davis.
