Biography
Originating in Hertfordshire, England during 1980, the fiercely political leftist punk band Flux of Pink Indians included vocalist Colin Latter, bassist Derek Birkett, guitarist Kevin Hunter and drummer Martin Wilson. Earlier known as the Epileptics, they later became Epi-X following objections from the British Epilepsy Association. In 1981 the group joined the Crass label and adopted its emphasis on anarchist politics together with punk abrasion, releasing the debut EP New Smell and landing an indie hit with “Johnny Kidd.”
After launching their own Spiderleg imprint, Flux of Pink Indians issued the full-length Strive to Survive Causing Least Suffering Possible in 1982. Their 1983 successor, The Fucking Cunts Treat Us Like Pricks, prompted many British retailers to refuse stocking it; a Manchester indie shop that did so was later prosecuted for displaying “obscene articles for publication for gain.” Following a lengthy break, the band—now shortened to Flux—reappeared in 1986 with the largely instrumental Uncarved Block and disbanded the next year, after which Derek Birkett founded the influential One Little Indian label.
