Biography
The Seattle quartet Flying Fish Cove set their indie pop apart by layering extra dimension into the music, shaping detailed and melodic pieces that framed their strikingly inventive words. Their first long-player, At Moonset, arrived in 2019 as a collage of strange and otherworldly narrative turns, held together by elaborate backdrops that mixed ringing guitars with chamber-pop accents.
Toward the close of the 2010s the group took shape around the lyrically dense material of singer, songwriter, and guitarist Dena Zilber. Her songs brimmed with storytelling imagery that merged mythological strands and inward-looking themes, and they were fleshed out by bassist Sean Canfield, drummer Jacob Jaffe, and lead guitarist Jake Jones. When assembling their earliest songs, the band referenced the wistful sadness and unconventional craft of indie-pop touchstones such as the Pastels, Heavenly, and Dolly Mixture. After issuing an EP in 2018 they tracked their debut album At Moonset, which brought in guest vocals from members of Iji and Frankie Cosmos along with singer/songwriter Lydia Brambila. Once recording wrapped, Jaffe exited and Chris McFarlane stepped in on drums.
