The Flying Tigers fuse the raw drive of classic rock & roll with the force of hybrid heavy metal techniques and sonic approaches, carving out a singular rhythmic identity within the alternative metal scene. After spending years performing in various groups throughout the greater Los Angeles region, vocalist-guitarist Ryan Martin and drummer Gary Benson formed the Flying Tigers. Bassist Dorian Heartsong, previously of Powerman 5000, completed the lineup when he joined the pair in late 2000. In the months after the group came together, the Flying Tigers began performing regularly and devoted the bulk of summer 2001 to touring as opening act for the Cult. Once the run concluded, the three musicians returned to Los Angeles to record their long-planned debut. They enlisted producer Brendan O'Brien, whose prior work includes Rage Against the Machine and Stone Temple Pilots, and spent the ensuing months shaping the album. Following this concentrated effort, the band issued the self-titled Flying Tigers in 2002, earning wider recognition and praise.
