Biography
For Lovers Only spent a short period signed to Motown Records between 1994 and 1995. Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin of the Temptations backed the trio, resulting in the release of a lone album along with a pair of singles. The lineup consisted of Terry Wayne Weeks from Birmingham, AL; Defrantz E. Forrest from South Bend, IN; and Michael Wayne Dickerson, whose birthplace remains undocumented. Forrest came from a household steeped in music, where his late stepfather Fred Lee Davis performed with various South Bend ensembles before joining the male chorus at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, while his biological father is Gene "Duke of Earl" Chandler. The label issued two tracks from the album, Mtume and Lucas' "The Closer I Get to You" and "Nasty Groove," the latter penned by Otis Williams, Dennis Nelson, and Tony Haynes. Commercial results proved modest for both the singles and the full-length project, prompting the group to split up. Weeks stepped into Ali Ollie Woodson's role with the Temptations in 1997, performing with Otis Williams, Ron Tyson, Barrington "Bo" Henderson of Dramatics and Lakeside, and Henry McGilberry of the Futures. Forrest subsequently joined the Cleveland-based Sly, Slick, & Wicked after their move to L.A., distinguishing them from the unrelated Los Angeles outfit that cut sides for Bad Boys Records.
