The year 1971 marked the formation of Formerly Fat Harry in England, a group built around three American expatriates: Gary Peterson on vocals, guitar and keyboards, Phil Greenberg handling vocals and guitar, and Bruce Barthol on bass after his time with Country Joe And The Fish. Saxophonist George Khan, previously of Battered Ornaments, joined drummer Laurie Allen to round out the lineup. Their output delivered an agreeable blend of country rock and good-time material that foreshadowed the pub rock surge. Commercial momentum never arrived, however, prompting the band’s dissolution once the core trio headed back to the United States. Allen later collaborated with Gong, Lol Coxhill and Robert Wyatt. Also recording under the name Nisar Ahmet Khan, George Khan contributed to multiple jazz-rock projects by Annette Peacock and Mike Westbrook prior to forming Mirage in 1977.
