Fox Face originated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the group coalesced in 2009 around guitarists and vocalists Lindsay DeGroot and Lydia Washechek. DeGroot had previously handled drums for the Olives, while Washechek, also known as Lydia Chioda, had previously collaborated with Gut Reactions, Static Eyes, and the Off-Days. Although DeGroot’s earliest material leaned toward pop-punk, the band’s muscular style crystallized once she began addressing darker, more personal subjects that encompassed politics and feminism. The lineup later solidified when bassist Mary Joy, also known as Mary Hickey, and drummer Christopher Capelle joined, enabling the 2013 cassette release simply titled Fox Face. Two years afterward the quartet issued a self-titled four-song EP on vinyl that garnered favorable notices and expanded their audience throughout Wisconsin.

Initially rooted in furious punk, Fox Face gradually shifted toward a denser, more atmospheric approach that folded in elements of indie rock, garage rock, and hard rock. Their concerts combine sneering attitude with overdriven guitars, while the anger in their songs remains pointed and accessible, targeting racists, sexists, polluters, and similar figures. The quartet’s first album-length statement, 2017’s Spoil + Destroy on Dirtnap Records, arrived as a darkly melodic set marked by garage-rock touches; their follow-up, 2021’s End of Man, emerged as a weightier, more foreboding production that pushed their hard-rock influences into greater prominence.

The 2016 single Teen Wiccan appeared on Chop Haus Records as a three-song 7-inch, and later that year the cassette-only compilation The Moon and the Tide gathered earlier tracks. Dirtnap, having recently relocated its operations to Madison, Wisconsin, issued Spoil + Destroy in November 2017. By then Capelle had exited, and Chopper Chioda, formerly of the Midwest Beat, assumed drumming duties; Capelle eventually rejoined and performed on End of Man.
