The Foxboro Hot Tubs surfaced quietly in December 2007 by uploading three tracks to their official site. Although the band withheld any details about its lineup, prominent bloggers and media sources quickly speculated that the project involved all three members of Green Day, who had stepped back from public view while preparing the follow-up to American Idiot. Those unverified claims were still circulating when “Mother Mary,” taken from the Stop Drop and Roll EP, appeared on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and reached number 16. The group’s melodic garage-rock approach—drawing equally from the Stooges, the Hives, and Tommy James—quickly found an audience, prompting fans to anticipate a full-length debut. Stop Drop and Roll!!! first appeared as an MP3 download in April 2008, followed by a physical release the next month.
