Biography
Fronted by French singer/songwriter François Marry, François & the Atlas Mountains operate as an indie pop ensemble marked by inventive stylistic choices. The group originated in the mid-2000s during Marry’s residence in Bristol, England, and sustained its development in both sound and membership across the following decade after his return to France. By weaving numerous worldwide influences into their richly textured pop approach, the outfit secured a deal with Domino Records and issued a series of favorably received albums, among them 2012’s E Volo Love and 2017’s Solid Mirage. Following an interval devoted to solo activity, Marry reinstated the Atlas Mountains endeavor in 2021 through their sixth release, the shimmering synth-driven Banane Bleue.
Born in Saintes, France, Marry moved to Bristol in 2003, where he launched a solo career while also serving as a touring member of the Scottish indie pop band Camera Obscura. After issuing the 2004 solo recording Les Anciennes Falaises, he created his second album, The People to Forget, alongside friends who adopted the name the Atlas Mountains; the 2006 effort appeared on the local independent imprint Stitch-Stitch Records. In 2008 he relocated back to France and pursued several additional projects that shaped the worldbeat-infused dream-pop direction of his 2009 album Plaine Inondable, issued by the Bristol-based label and collective Fence Records.
Maintaining a flexible roster of musicians and stylistic directions, François & the Atlas Mountains joined the roster of the prominent independent Domino Records for the 2012 release E Volo Love. After dividing time between the United Kingdom and France, Marry established himself in his home country to complete the band’s fourth album, Piano Ombre, which surfaced in March 2014. The stylistically expansive and increasingly political Solid Mirage arrived in 2017, after which Marry resumed solo endeavors and set the poetry of French writer Baudelaire to music on the 2018 album Les Fleurs du Mal, released via the Silène label.
Across the project’s successive phases, François & the Atlas Mountains have preserved a changeable membership, yet on the sixth album Marry assumed complete control of the enterprise, working solely with Finnish synth-pop producer Jaakko Eino Kalevi and mixing engineer Renaud Letang. Issued by Domino in early 2021, Banane Bleue displayed a relaxed atmosphere, reflective lyricism, and a restrained emphasis on synthesizers.
