In 1946 Rádio Tamoio engaged Francisco Carlos, later to rank among the decade’s most celebrated vocalists, as a staff singer; he subsequently transferred his services to Rádio Globo. His debut LP appeared in 1950 and featured the carnival march “Meu Brotinho,” which enjoyed immediate commercial success. That same year he appeared in the motion pictures Aviso Aos Navegantes, directed by Watson Macedo, and Não É Nada Disso, directed by José Carlos Burle; four additional films would follow. Listeners chose him as Best Singer of the Year in 1953, and five years afterward he received the title Rei do Rádio. Europe received him in 1962 when he joined the Fifth Caravana da UBC.
