Frank Patterson

"Ireland's Golden Tenor," Frank Patterson entered the world in Tipperary, where he spent his formative years. On the opening day of primary school he declared his aim to pursue a singing career, and during adolescence he joined the Wren Boys, a local ensemble, for performances before leaving his studies to assist in his mother's printing firm. After settling in Dublin during 1961 he pursued formal vocal instruction, and in 1964 he competed at the Feis Ceoil, claiming first place across four separate categories that encompassed oratorio, lieder, and the German Gold Cup. That achievement secured him a recording agreement with the Phillips label, and he subsequently joined Janine Micheau for multiple productions of Pelleas and Melisande. Although his initial repertoire centered on classical material, Patterson gradually shifted focus toward pop interpretations, particularly traditional Irish ballads. He frequently shared the stage with his wife, concert pianist Eily O'Grady, drawing capacity crowds to venues that ranged from London's Royal Albert Hall to New York's Carnegie Hall. The resurgence of interest in Celtic music during the 1990s elevated his profile further, prompting the re-release of earlier recordings for American listeners; in 1998 he headlined the PBS program Ireland in Song while simultaneously issuing a matching LP. On June 10, 2000, Patterson succumbed to a brain tumor at the age of 61.
