Biography
Among Swedish composers of the 1800s, Berwald produced notable symphonic and chamber works while also practicing as an orthopedist, directing a glass works, and sharing ownership of a sawmill. He is acknowledged as a master symphonist and the leading Swedish composer of his century. His four symphonies, Sérieuse, Capricieuse, Sinfonie singulière, and Symphony no. 4 in E-flat, rank as his strongest output, displaying an adventurous handling of modulation paired with a firm classical melodic line.
