Before Vee Jay Records folded in the mid-1960s, Freddie Hughes ranked among its final acts to achieve commercial traction. Two Top 20 R&B entries arrived for him in 1965 in the form of “Oo Wee Baby, I Love You” and “You Can’t Take It Away.” Transitioning next to the Wand imprint of Scepter Records, he scored a further success with “Send My Baby Back,” which Lonnie Hewitt co-wrote, produced, and arranged; the single reached number 20 on the R&B charts and number 94 pop, securing Hughes the opportunity to record a full-length album for the company. He exited Wand Records in 1969 to join the roster at Brunswick Records.
