Biography
Frederick Nighthawk stands among the elite keyboardists who frequently take the spotlight alone across San Francisco Bay venues. His adopted name extends an established pattern among blues acts and their leading figures, many of whom choose monikers drawn from hawks along with crows, jaybirds, ravens, and roosters. His sound fuses currents from country and jazz while remaining anchored in the expressive core of blues, much as a shoreline gathers its defining elements from the surrounding sea without admitting every coastal bird. Rather than restricting himself to familiar or time-honored material, he is recognized for a body of original compositions that appear on Red Mountain and Orchard releases. Extensive stage time has allowed him to refine these pieces through as many as 250 performances each year, whether fronting a band or appearing unaccompanied. Among his works, “Up on a Hawksbill” sustains the avian motif, while “The Wild Coast,” “Sweet Morning Rain,” and “Colors of the Dawn” explore the surrounding landscape; “Blues for My Baby” returns to a traditional blues approach.
