Born on 16 June 1948 in Lucerne, Switzerland, Studer taught himself music and took up drumming at the age of 16, performing across diverse ensembles spanning rock, jazz, and experimental styles. Relocating to Rome in 1970 alongside a rock trio, he later served as a consultant in the creation of Paiste cymbals. During the 1970s, his tenure included the jazz-rock outfit Om before joining the rock group Hand In Hand. Between 1981 and 1984, Studer established a trio alongside Rainer Brüninghaus and Markus Stockhausen, subsequently collaborating with the Charlie Mariano / Jasper Van’t Hof ensemble. He further participated in the percussion collective Singing Drums featuring Pierre Favre, Paul Motian, and Nana Vasconcelos. His extensive travels as a performer have encompassed the USA, Central and South America, the Caribbean, North Africa, and Japan.
