Biography
Originating in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the bluegrass quartet Free Range Pickin' was assembled by siblings Steve Schley on mandolin and Geoff Schley on guitar alongside their St. Paul childhood companions Tony Ihrig on banjo and Dan Christensen on bass. The group performs its own material in both conventional bluegrass and "newgrass" or "jamgrass" idioms, steadily developing an audience throughout the upper Midwest through support slots for major acts such as Béla Fleck & the Flecktones and through appearances at festivals. Its first album, From the Other Side of the Fence, appeared in 2002, followed by the self-titled second CD in May 2004.
