Brooklyn's trio Freezing Cold pulled its lineup from multiple acclaimed D.I.Y. acts. The foursome channeled the literary punk leanings heard in the Weakerthans and the Constantines, placing incisive, high-stakes songcraft inside the open-exchange values that defined late-2010s independent scenes.

Around 2017 the group assembled with Aye Nako's drummer/vocalist Angie Boylan, singer/guitarist Jeff Cunningham—previously of Ordinary Lives and Bridge and Tunnel—and ex-Weed Hounds bassist Nick Rice. Their sound drew equally from D.C. post-hardcore outfits and under-the-radar 2000s indie punk. Working quickly, they cut a three-song demo alongside Swearin's Kyle Gilbride and booked a few East Coast dates. By 2019 they had wrapped their debut full-length, Glimmer. Just before the album's late-September arrival, Sleater-Kinney tapped Boylan as touring drummer after longtime kitwoman Janet Weiss resigned.
