Biography
French for Rabbits formed as a dreamy indie folk duo based in Wellington, New Zealand. Brooke Singer, an airy-voiced singer and songwriter originally from Waikuku Beach on the South Island, joined forces with guitarist John Fitzgerald in 2011; the pair started recording and playing shows together before relocating to the capital. Their sound, marked by an enchanting, misty quality that reflects the surrounding coastal landscape, led to a first release in 2012: the six-song Claimed by the Sea EP, issued through Wellington’s Home Alone Records collective. The next year brought tours across New Zealand and Europe, followed in late 2013 by the single “Goat,” which previewed their planned full-length debut. While Home Alone continued to manage domestic releases, the duo signed with the American indie label Lefse Records and issued their debut album, Spirits, in October 2014.
