After completing his training as a music educator, Silcher settled in Stuttgart and began offering private lessons. He wrote a cantata for the University of Tubingen and took up the post of director there in 1817. Silcher established the Akademische Liedertafel in 1820 and the Oratorienchor in 1839. He assembled a collection of folk songs and drew on those melodies in his teaching, introducing students to music through familiar popular idioms. Influenced by the structures favored by Mozart, Weber, and Mendelssohn, he went on to compose roughly two hundred and fifty songs within that folk-song framework.
