Melbourne, Australia’s Full Ugly emerged with a soft, jangly, shambling pop aesthetic that first took shape through understated early exchanges between Michael Caterer and songwriter Nathan Burgess. Already sharing duties in the broader-ranging Love Connection, the pair gradually shifted focus toward material earmarked for Full Ugly. Thomas Mendelovits and Zach Schneider were brought in to complete the quartet, after which the group commenced live appearances and studio work. When Caterer moved from Australia to the United States, the remaining members pressed ahead; Burgess enlisted a new player and captured numerous tracks with the founding lineup prior to Caterer’s 2011 relocation to New York. The band’s initial public exposure arrived via a contribution to the 2012 Vacant Valley Records compilation Rough End of the Stick and another track on a four-way split 7" shared with fellow Melbourne outfit the Stevens. The following year brought the Drove Down 7", which preceded the spring 2014 arrival of the group’s debut album Spent the Afternoon on Bedroom Suck.
