Biography
Fuming Mouth emerged in 2013 when vocalist and guitarist Mark Whelan assembled the group in Milford, Massachusetts. Its sound fuses the frigid “Swedeth” approach of Entombed with the gritty hardcore edge of Gatecreeper and Frozen Soul. Alongside Whelan the lineup features guitarist Andrew Budwey and bassist Pat Merson. The band’s first full-length album, The Grand Descent, earned widespread underground praise upon release in 2019. That record and the 2020 EP Beyond the Tomb drew interest from Nuclear Blast, which signed the group the next year. Whelan’s fight against acute myeloid leukemia (AML) postponed work on the follow-up album. The band returned in 2023 with Last Day of Sun, a Kurt Ballou-produced effort whose inventive, semi-conceptual design reflected Whelan’s path to recovery.
