The indie pop group Further emerged in the mid-1990s under the leadership of brothers Brent and Darren Rademaker. Having previously operated as Shadowland, which released two albums on Geffen before the label ended their contract, the act shifted both its moniker and musical direction. Shadowland drew from 1960s sounds, yet Further embraced lo-fi noise reminiscent of Dinosaur Jr. With Kevin Fitzgerald handling drums and Josh Schwartz on guitar, the Rademaker siblings produced singles through independent outlets such as Christmas and Lissys. They maintained a consistent output of albums including Griptape (1992), Sometimes Chimes (1993), and Grimes Golden (1994), alongside various EPs. Following Grimes Golden, Fitzgerald departed, prompting the remaining members to alternate drumming duties. The band's concluding release, the 1996 EP Next Time West Coast issued solely in Japan, signaled an emerging psychedelic country direction that would define their subsequent endeavors. Upon Further's dissolution, Brent and Darren established the Tyde, an outfit echoing Buffalo Springfield, and Brent additionally launched Beachwood Sparks, a country-pop ensemble, alongside Christopher Gunst, who had contributed to Further in an auxiliary capacity.
