Biography
The Danish electronic trio Future 3 emerged during the mid-1990s after issuing their well-received first album, We Are the Future 3. Anders Remmer, Thomas Knak, and Jesper Skaaning connected while immersed in Copenhagen’s thriving ambient and chillout community, later uniting to craft their distinct variety of introspective, relaxed electropop. Their 1995 debut was followed in 1998 by Stay with the Future 3, which contained the widely noticed single “The Boy from West-Bronx” that received international exposure and rotation on MTV along with other major broadcasters. The group also supplied remixes for Coldcut and Shantel prior to unveiling their third album, 2011’s Like the Future 3. That same year Knak handled production on several tracks for Björk’s Vespertine, initiating a gradual transition that encouraged the members to explore separate directions. In 2002 they introduced the parallel project System and issued a dub album. Over the following years the three continued occasional joint work while each pursued solo paths, with Remmer recording as Dub Tractor, Knak as Opiate, and Skaaning as Acustic. They reconvened in 2006 under the name People Press Play, joined by vocalist Sara Savery. Another System EP appeared the next year while Future 3 remained inactive. After performing as System at Copenhagen’s Strøm Festival in 2010, they began developing material that would become the quartet’s fourth album. Released by Morr Records in 2014, With and Without combined the song-focused collaborations of their later projects with the layered atmosphere of their earlier recordings.
