During the late-’90s rebuilding phase at Bad Boy following the Notorious B.I.G.’s death, G. Dep entered the label’s fold. Sharing Harlem origins with fellow Bad Boy rapper Black Rob, the artist also known as the Deputy made his first appearance on Rob’s 1999 debut album and later contributed guest spots to tracks by other artists on the roster. Once Puff Daddy adopted the name P. Diddy, the label ushered in its Saga Continues period with Diddy’s album of that title; within this new chapter Dep emerged as a central figure, positioned just behind Black Rob as Diddy’s primary collaborator. Child of the Ghetto, Dep’s debut album, arrived in late 2001 and contained “Let’s Get It,” one of the stronger cuts from the earlier Saga Continues project, as well as the lead single “Special Delivery.” Like most Bad Boy releases of the era, however, the album left little lasting mark, and Dep soon receded from view. He reappeared in 2007 on the independently released album Bad Boy, which also featured Loon, another former Bad Boy artist who had drifted from the label.
